11 July '64 is most unfortunate, unless Lt.Ballard is summarizing, which he doesn't seem to be doing. South Bend is some miles SE of Pine Bluff. On 4 July, Powell Clayton sent a scout party SE as far as Arkansas Post (OR 41/2:48), but they returned by 9 p.m. 9 July (OR 41/2: 97), apparently mostly /all north of river. Then on 13 July Clayton takes 1000 men and "five pieces of the Sigel artillery"[??] 15 mi SE of Pine Bluff where he found Crawford's brigade but returned 14 July (OR 41/ 1: 68-9). Knowing the Confederates had large forces to his SE I'm sure Clayton had pretty strong pickets out in that direction. A small irony: the fighting may have been beween 7th Missouri (US) and 7th Missouri (CS).
