Bryan,

I may have sent the link to your old e-mail address, you know me I ain't got good sense.

As I said the Journal is Identified as Miers being in the 1st Ark. and 3rd Arkansas. But he was in Capt Lacy's Company "C" 2nd Arkansas Battalion from El Dorado. I have copied here some of the commentary about the 2nd Arkansas Battalion at the Battle of Mechanicville from that Journal. Here is the Link to that Journal. But it gives a lot more insight to what they were doing at Dumfries and Evansport.

"Our regement was first to cross the little river, loaded our guns runing. This was the begining of the 7 days battle around Richmond.

We charged them 3 times before we routed them Just then our Major said to me, "listen, Thank God, listen to Jacksons canon." He had slipped round to attact them in the rear. We just could hear his guns. this was called the battle of Mechanicks vally, 9 miles from Richmond faught in 62. We faught all day and till 10' o'clock at night and then lay down in line of battle till morning when we found the had been retreating all night. That night our Regment charged up to the mouth of a battery, it pouring shot and shells into us. We did not take it. As we fell back a shell struck our Co. lengthwise. Killed our Major, shot a arm off 2 men, wounded 6 or more and broke my gun to atoms in my hands and did not hurt me.

When we started in this battle, I boged down in a march and pulled my shoes off in the mud to keep from being tramped to death by soldiers. They are there yet, I guess. I went threw the balance of the fight barefotted.

The next morning our Co. was so badly cut up and killed out, Gen Lee detaled us to bury the ded. Our quarters was on the road runing to Richmon 9 miles and the citisans came flocking to the battle field, picking up things. We palced gards and as they come out with their plunder we took it from them and sent them back to town. We soon had a pile of knapsacks, blankets, hats, shoes soap, cantens, gun cartrage, boxes and any thing you could think of. Enough to fill a large house. We was all day and night and next day burying the dead. There we found men in the marsh that fell ded and sank out of sight in the mud and water, lots of them. Don't suppose we got all of them. The 2nd day the skin would slip if you took hold of it, so we dug holes 8 or 10 feet from them and hooked a long pole in their clothes and drug them in and piched dirt on them."
