Re: Chew's Sharpshooter Battalion

Danny,

Thanks for the response! I had thought since Brooks' Brigade included talk of Hawthorn and Chew, that the other regiments present would have been those of King and Pleasants. Thank you for clarifying that they weren't, and that it was other regiments.

After going over the available material, the following is my interpretation of the battalion from the companies beginnings until they end up in Hawthorn's Infantry Regiment. Once again, I do not consider this authoratative and I welcome any corrections from those reading this. Here is what I came up with:

There were four companies that made up Chew's Battalion and subsequently comprised three companies of Hawthorn's/Cocke's Infantry Regiment. The four were as follows:

Captain Elbert Dawson's Company (Madison County) Organized September 3, 1862 on King's River, Madison County. Marched thence to Elm Springs and was mustered into service on September 12, 1862, as Arkansas Infantry.

Captain Wiley Tumlinson's Company (Scott County) Organized July 4th, 1862 and served as cavalry until September 16th.

Captain B.T. Hailey's Company (Marion, Carroll and Benton Counties) Organized in June, 1862 and served as cavalry until August 24th.

Captain Samuel W. Perkin's Company (Scott County) Organized in June/July, 1862 and served as cavalry until September 16th.

Dawson's Company was the last to be organized and apparently never served as cavalry. The other three companies mentioned above spent approximately two months serving together as cavalry in Gipson's Battalion Mounted Rifles. They were eventually dismounted at the approximate dates mentioned above to serve as infantry. Sometime between September 16th and October 19th these four companies were grouped together as an unarmed battalion. On October 19th, A.T. Hawthorn is appointed major and placed in command of this battalion and it is initially known as "Hawthorn's Battalion." Two weeks later, by November 3rd, Major Hawthorn is elected colonel of Johnson's Arkansas Infantry Regiment. By November 5th, Captain Robert E. Chew is appointed major and placed in command of the battalion which then becomes known as "Chew's Sharpshooter Battalion." It is organized as follows:

Major Robert E. Chew, commanding
Company A- Dawson's Company
Company B- Tumlinson's Company
Company C- Perkins' Company
Company D- Hailey's Company

It appears that a portion of Tumlinson's Company was divided and placed into Perkins' Company as two men from the former company show up on the casualty list of Company C at the battle of Prairie Grove. On the day of the battle only one of the original company commanders is present. The other three are absent, most likely due to illness. At the time of the battle on December 7th, the battalion's command is as follows:

Major Robert E. Chew, commanding
Company A- 1st Lieutenant Willis Greenlee
Company B- 1st Lieutenant Jacob C. Moles
Company C- Captain Samuel W. Perkins
Company D- Lieutenant Samuel L. Hayhurst (specific rank not noted, probably 1st lieutenant)

During the battle Major Robert E. Chew is killed, and on December 14th the four companies of the battalion are consolidated into Hawthorn's Infantry Regiment. The reorganization is as follows:

Company A, Chew's Battalion becomes Company G, Hawthorn's Infantry Regiment.

Company B, Chew's Battalion becomes Company K, Hawthorn's Infantry Regiment. It appears this also includes the members of Tumlinson's Company who had gone over to Perkin's Company. They rejoined their former company and became part of Company K.

Companies C and D, Chew's Battalion become Company H, Hawthorn's Infantry Regiment. Captain Samuel W. Perkins is apparently forced out by this consolidation and does not appear on the roster of Hawthorn's Regiment.
