Finns Point National Cemetery
In Response To: Re: Logans ()

Leona and Bryan:

The Fort Delaware Society database contains the following information: "Lieutenant (1st or 2nd not stated) Sylvanus LOGAN, (no company id), 23rd Arkansas Cavalry (maybe 33rd Arkansas Infantry) captured at Arkansas Post on 11 JAN 1863. Died Fort Delaware 16 APR 1863." Our source was a microfilm record (not the Compiled Military Service Records) of transfers, etc. at Fort Delaware obtained from the National Archives some years ago. These microfilmed records were badly faded and hard to read.

Interestingly enough, his name does not appear on the Confederate monument at Finns Point National Cemetery. We do have him listed among our extra "500" Confederate dead published in "The Died at Fort Delaware" (Fort Delaware Society, June 1997) for whom we found official records of death.

I know that Brian is working from the Compiled Military Service Records. Is there any chance the Society could get a photocopy of these records from either of you for our archives? This is important in order to "prove" our database relative to the additional Confederate dead not named on the Finns Point monument. We hope one day to sponsor an additional memorial plate presenting the names of these documented dead.

It is most likely that he was interred in the small Confederate cemetery plot on the north end of Pea Patch Island in April 1863. Fort Delaware sits on the southeastern corner of this small island in the middle of the Delaware River. The Finns Point soldier’s burial grounds just across the Delaware River in New Jersey were not pressed into service to bury the Confederate dead until June 1863. Prior to June 1863, fewer than 100 Confederate POWs had died at Fort Delaware. The Confederate remains buried on the Island were exhumed in November 1875 and taken across the River to the newly established Finns Point National Cemetery and interred in a mass grave next to their comrades buried there during the war.
