A comment: The site I believe you are speaking of is what was called Hicks Station which is about 2 miles east of Lonoke.
That is the area that the Union troops were posted at after the Battle of Brownsville in August of 1863. I say "after the battle" because the courthouse at Brownsville was torn down so a barracks could be built for the men. I have also heard that the courthouse was used a hosptial for a while but by which side I do not know.
I have heard numbers like 25,000 Union men passed through there. The Union forces stayed at the central Arkansas location until the war ended is the way I understand it.
When a person speaks of Brownsville, you always have to know the time element as it changed greatly around here. I live within a couple of miles of the place so I have heard all kinds of old tales.
I may have only confused the issue, but if someone could nail that down as the truth, the folks at the Lonoke County Museum would love to know about the hosptial.
