Excerpts from Henry M. Stanley's autobiography covering his service with the 6th Arkansas is posted to the Capitol Guards' web site at http://www.geocities.com/capitalguards/history.html.
Stanley appears to have been quite a storyteller and was not averse to stretching the truth if it made for a better story. Nathaniel Hughes, Jr. did a very nice book several years ago on his Civil War service... Henry Morton Stanley -- Confederate which makes for a good read. Stanley's pre-War expereince are also cited in parts of Orville Taylor's Negro Slavery in Arkansas in describing the work of field hands in the Toothpick State.
