This is very interesting! I would have thought that the two examples I gave were anomalies. I continue to be amazed at the dedication of most Confederate soldiers. I don't think that there would be any doubt as to which way I would choose if I were in a similar circumstance.
I did have one ancestor in the 36th Georgia who enlisted as a private in 1862. In April 1863 at Vicksburg he was appointed regimental surgeon with back pay awarded to day of enlistment.
