Another factor in the problem, and the bane of many genealogists today, is that the newly-minted officers of the Confederacy were about as good at military record-keeping as they were their other military duties... which ain't saying much for either. The mass replacement of these officers by new officers after the Conscription Act was implemented in April 1862 didn't help the matters much.
