Re: Robert N. Ross, believed to be CSA

Linda,

I forgot to answer your question about why the 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles was camped at Flat Creek, Missouri, in late October and early November, 1861.

Before and after the battle of Wilson's Creek, Brig. Gen. McCulloch saw his mission as protecting northern Arkansas. After defeating Lyon and sending the Union forces fleeing, McCulloch posted his Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas troops at various points (such at Flat Creek) in southern Missouri until he could ascertain what the North's intentions were, vis-a-vis Arkansas. Price and his Missourians, of course, were committed to the liberation of their home State, so they detached from McCulloch's force and went off to engage the Yankees further up in Missouri.

After determining that there was no immediate threat of another Union advance into northwest Arkansas, McCulloch withdrew to Fort Smith and the Indian Territory, where they conducted a winter campaign against pro-Union Creeks and Seminoles under Chief Hopoeithleyohoa, culminating in the battle of Chustenenlah. McCulloch then took his command to winter over at Cantonment Bee, near Huntsville.
