I agree wholeheartedly with your sloppy research comments. My favorite up here is about a skirmish though, not a soldier. A guy had a piece of granite left over from a project that he wanted to do something with. He found an article in The World (NY) newspaper titled "The War in Arkansas. Rebels Defeated at Evansville. 140 killed and 150 taken prisoner." Once into the meat of the article it talks about Clarkson being captured. The battle the article is referring to is the Battle of Locust Grove in Oklahoma. As evidence that things never change, the newspaper was wrong. The "researcher" took the article at face value and now there is a fine granite marker commemorating a battle that never happened. Oy vey.
