Although it didn't help Arkansas much, the Confederate War Department made an uncharacteristically good move in sending Gen. Richard Taylor to Louisiana. If they had sent someone of Dick Taylor's quality to Arkansas, things might have turned out differently. Most of the Union generals who served in Arkansas were mediocre, and a skilled and aggressive Confederate general could have given them fits.
