Capt. John Matthews Wasson is indeed on the Jacksonport parole list. He enlisted in Co. I, 14th (McCarver's) Arkansas Infantry, at Pocahontas, Arkansas, on October 24, 1861; age 25; and was elected third lieutenant. McCarver's regiment was broken up and its companies distributed among two different commands. Wasson's company became Co. B, 21st Arkansas Infantry, on May 15, 1862. Wasson was promoted to first lieutenant on May 13, 1862; and to captain on August 18, 1862. He was severely wounded (right leg and left arm) at Corinth, Mississippi, on October 4, 1862. He was captured when the Confederate garrison at Vicksburg, Mississippi, surrendered on July 4, 1863, and was released on parole. He was arrested by Federal troops in Lawrence County, Arkansas, on October 7, 1863; sent via St. Louis to Camp Chase, Ohio; then sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio; then transferred to New Orleans, Louisiana, for exchange on January 9, 1865. When Confederate forces in northeast Arkansas surrendered at the end of the war, all soldiers were ordered to report to one of the two parole locations -- Jacksonport and Wittsburg. Captain Wasson reported to Jacksonport, and was paroled on June 5, 1865. Through clerical error, he, like many others, is actually listed twice in the parole list.
