General McCray does not have a tombstone. The cemetery he was buried at was Cook County's "potter's field" cemetery, where there were no headstones. Over time the cemetery was abandoned and the location of the cemetery became forgotten. About 15 years ago the site (on Dunning St.) was paved over and a parking lot was put in. There were subsequent protests and a hearing before the city council, in which I was involved.
I have a copy of his death certificate, which gives the date of death.
The "General Hardy" mentioned is William J. Hardee of the Army of Tennessee.
