My great-great-grandfather was in the 10th Alabama Cavalry, Company K. He enlisted at age 17 in the fall of 1864. Over the winter of 63-64, his commanders top to bottom were Forrest-Roddey-Patterson. He passed on tales of being in running fire fights during Wilson's Raid. I still possess his cavalry Enfield because he did not surrender in person. Patterson ordered his men to go home after the Selma campaign due to a lack of rations, and his staff paroled the men in absentia.
Three of my great-great-grandfather's first cousins (Oden) served in the 1st Alabama Cavalry (USA). Another of his first cousins (Jenkins) served in 1st Texas Cavalry (CSA).
