Thomason's 19th Battalion Alabama Cavalry

While transcribing some of General Braxton Bragg's Papers I came across this that I thought might be of interest to some folks. Spelling, grammar, etc. as they appear.

Notation left margin:

General,
The General Commanding has directed that Thomason’s 2nd Battalion of Ala. Cavalry report to you for such assignment in your command, as you may deem proper. He suggests that it be incorporated with Col. Hagan’s Battalion.

The original organization of the Battalion was illegal, and the election of Lieut. Col. Thomason, and Major Lea without authority. Major Lea will not be regarded as any longer an officer of the Command. Thomason may be treated as Major. Companies A, B, C and D have the complement of men required by law. Companies E & F have not now, and never had the requisite number. These two Companies will be re-organized, and incorporated into one.

Major Lea has absented himself from the command without leave and carried off with him many of the men. He is reported, also, to have been guilty of other delinquencies. On his reporting to the battalion for duty, if of Conscript age, he will be enrolled.

Lt. Col. Thomason is on duty on a Court of Inquiry by virtue of orders from Genl J. E. Johnston.
