The widow Haley stated in her application that JV was in Company K, while Lt. Haley is shown in Company I. Records from most units in Roddey's command are pretty sketchy, so it is very possible that no record exists of his service. Widows pension applications, due to memory issues of many applicants, tend to have more errors than are found in contemporaneous service records, so she may have remembered the wrong company or even the wrong regiment. However, I think I would take the application at face value and lean toward him being in Company K, and agree with George that 16 is mighty young for a 1st Lt.
