Looking at his CMSR, all indications are that he is white. Only one card lists him as "orderly", and my reading is "Cols orderly". The original transcriber, on the outside of the card jacket, wrote it out as Colonel's Orderly. His enlistment (not residence) is shown in three places on three different muster rolls: Greenville, TN; Bulls Gap, TN; and Troy, AL. Information on the ADAH site shows his birthplace as England, his occupation as painter, and his residence as Greenville, TN. This from a roll taken in the field dated 1-1-1865. He was surrendered at Appomattox.
