Here is a possibility, Greg. I wonder if Co. A, Ruffin Dragoons, may have first called themselves Butler Cavalry for the town of Butler in Choctaw County. Ruffin Dragoons came from Choctaw and Sumpter counties, and, according to this account, took their name to honor Samuel Ruffin who personally outfitted the company and owned much land and many slaves in Choctaw County.
