One would assume that Butler Cavalry was raised either in Butler County, or in the town of Butler in Choctaw County; but that could be an erroneous assumption. Robert Davidson Montgomery was 2nd Lieut. of Co. C, 3rd Ala. Cavalry. He was appointed Sept. 2, 1862, but there is no enlistment date given. The first muster roll for this company predates the formation of the regiment and is shown with the original name of Robin's Ind. Co. Ala. Cavalry under Captain Josiah Robins. On the ADAH record for Capt. Robins it states: "This company was organized at Clifton, Wilcox County in September 1861 and was composed of men from west Wilcox, a few from Monroe and some from Marengo." Robins eventually commanded the regiment. William Montgomery was 2nd Lieut. of the Prattville Dragoons, AKA Independent Company Alabama Cavalry, commanded by Capt. Jesse J Cox. Cards at NARA indicate that the company was, for a time, Co. I, 7th Alabama Infantry. Co, I was a mounted company with men mainly from Montgomery and Autauga counties. The company eventually became Co. H, 3rd Ala. Cavalry, but reading the records it does not appear that Lt. Montgomery remained with the company.
