Union Brigade at the Crater

A passage appears in "Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray", by Mamie Yeary, on page 84, that was written by Jasper Newton Brooks, a private in the 14th Alabama Infantry.

The quote is as follows, "The siege of Petersburg was another long hard fight. We were ordered up there after the “blow up”, which occurred at sun-up. Here we met a brigade of negroes led by a red-headed, one-arm man, who was shot down by our first volley, and fearful was the scene which followed."

I am trying to identify the "red-headed, one-arm man" who commanded or served in the brigade, so I can identify the brigade.

Can anyone provide any assistance in identifying this Union officer and the brigade he belonged to?
