Re: Monroe county Alabama home guard

Mr. Pitts has made a very valid point....the Sepulga River, Escambia River watersheds gave concealment to soldiers who deserted seeking to reach Pensacola. Both watersheds are easily reached by passing through eastern Monroe and western Conecuh counties.....the Middleton family was established in this neighborhood as was Capt. Daily. After the war, the outlaw John Wesley Hardin used this corridor to elude authorities and reach Pollard (former site of a large Confederate camp) where he remained for some time while moving in and out of Pensacola/Mobile, and the Fla. panhandle (where he as captured). The area today is sparsely populated.
