Perhaps A Rare Confederate Soldier

According to records on fold3 Private Angus McGilberry enlisted for a few months in 1861 in Company A of the 23rd Alabama Infantry and was discharged the same year.

What makes this particular soldier rare is that he has a service record for the War of 1812 in the United States 12th Infantry along with a physical description.

While there were some WBST men in the War of 1812 they are usually high ranking officers like Admiral Farragut who had been a powder monkey during the War of 1812.

This is the first time I've encountered a regular War of 1812 soldier as an active enlisted member of the Confederate military even if it was only for a few months.

Company A of the 23rd Alabama Infantry had many soldiers from Wilcox County, Alabama and he is listed as living in Wilcox County in the 1860 United States census. The Alabama State census also showed him living in Wilcox County, Alabama. The State census for Alabama in 1870 last listed him as living in Wilcox County, Alabama.

It would appear that he may have been buried at the Enon Cemetery in Wilcox County as many members of the Gilberry surname are buried there and the cemetery was established in the late 1850's.

However no death records or date of death or place of burial can be located at the current time. This two time veteran may or may not have a tombstone.

If the 1860 United States census is correct than Angus was born about 1795 putting his enlistment in the 23rd Alabama Infantry about 66 years old. His surname was spelled as Gillburg but corrected to Gilberry on the 1860 census.

While Angus would have fallen short of the six months required for a pension in the Confederate Army he may have been eligible for a War of 1812 pension however since he had been a Confederate soldier, the United States may not have recognized his service in the War of 1812.

One of his sons would die at the Camp Chase Prison.

There also appears to be another Angus Gilberry living in Perry County, Mississippi born about 1840 and is not the same soldier in question.
