From an unsigned letter of March 18, 1929 to the Adjutant General, War Department, re

James Wildcat Carter (Cherokee Indian)
Enlisted at Chicacha, Indian Territory, April 1861 under General Albert Pike, Company C, 18th Arkansas, afterwards 3rd, Arkansas Reg. Cavalry. Robert Patton was Lieut, in this company, Sam Young was a member in this company. Came from Helena to Memphis after of battle of Pea Ridge.
Applicant was a Scout and was with Gen. Churchill, was transferred as a scout to Gen. Forrest. His Captain was named Smiley, Capt. of Scouts, Colonel was Baxter Smith. Surrendered to Gen. Canby at Gainesville, May 1865. He was a Scout under Gen. Standwattie, his nickname was “Cat” and “Jim”
