His Confederate memorial marker shows 3rd Ark. Cav. We do find a soldier by the name in the 3rd Ala.

J. W. Carter, 26, Private, Capt. Robbins’ Company, Alabama Mounted Volunteers,* enlisted October 22, 1861 in Wilcox County, Ala., for the war, value of horse, $225, detached to Brigade Ordnance Wagon December 20,1862, paid February 13, 1864 for the last six months of 1863 while remaining on extra duty, no further records

* This organization subsequently became Company C, 3rd Regiment Alabama Cavalry
