I'm stumped!! In searching Pvt. M. M. Gaines of Co. E, 22nd AL Infantry, I find a similar entry in Morton's TN Light Artillery. It's apparently the same individual, as evidenced by a reference to Calhoun County, AL as home, showing on the discharge records of Morton's Artillery. I've been unable to find any connectivity.

Was there a connection between the two units?
