Hello George, Your correct there were a great deal of imposters claiming to be the last Confederate and that is the reason why I put up the question mark. As of late about only 10% of the soldiers claiming to be the last have turned out to be so at least as their CMSR's are concerned. Others like Thomas Riddle of Company I of the 33rd Virginia just have very different accounts of what happened in the war. He was quoted as saying he was shot five times by some snipers and the general told him to leave the field. His CMSR's say that he deserted in 1863 and prior to that he had been absent without leave on some occasions. Personally I think anyone that lives beyond 100 years deserves some kind of award. There were as you stated many fraudulent claims for pensions. And the very definition of a Confederate soldier gets lost in the mix. Home Guards militia units etc.
