It is my opinion that Jefferson Davis was hoping to make it to Bainbridge, Georgia and while there would meet with Charles James Munnerlyn. Munnerlyn had already indirectly helped Judah P. Benjamin escape into Florida and make good on his escape. Davis and Munnerlyn had known each other rather well. Munnerlyn was rather well known in Decatur County, Georgia history as helping Confederates escape. Munnerlyn's plantation has been dug over the years looking for the Confederate gold and silver that was never buried there in my opinion.
