The postal history of the CSA is a fascinating subject. Certainly sending and receiving letters would have been of great importance to the people during the war. Back in those days the mail was not delivered to your house but picked up at the Post Office.

On March 6,1861,John H Reagan,of Texas, was appointed Postmaster-General of the Confederate States. The post had before been tendered to Henry Ellet and Wirt Adams, both former Congressman from Mississippi, but declined, and it was with great reluctance that the famous Texan finally accept the position. Reagan did an outstanding job.
