Re: Lawrence County, Ala Union Prisoners

Ahh, Mr. Martin, you have out done yourself. Your added material and links, combined with the original posted item, would make an interesting chapter in a book of Alabama battles, or perhaps in a Roddey book. All that one needs is a little census work and maybe a tad more research to pad out the pages. Actually, a book of Alabama battles sounds interesting. Everyone writes of the biggies (Gettsyburg, The Crater, Shilo, etc.) Maybe it's time for the battle of Courtland to have its day. Another possibility for a chapter would be the "Atrocities of the Enemy in North Alabama" story, with census and local (Athens area) newspaper research on various aspects thereof, including Judge Daniel Coleman's career. etc.

There was also a time when the Courtland area was host to a few thousand "Colored" troops, which might make for interesting reading. (But what do I know; I'm not too swift on the uptake, myself.)

Anyway, as usual your knowledge and research is appreciated. Thank you, Sir.
