There is only one card in Private J. A. Lockley's Compiled Service Record. He appears on a Register of the General Hospital at Petersburg, Virginia, where he was admitted on March 22, 1862, suffering from Chronic Diarrhea. He was returned to duty on April 4, 1862.

The following is some information on Company B, 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Company “B”
Livingston Rifles
Sumter County

Captain: John Hubbard Dent
1st Lieutenant: Steve M. Potts
2nd Lieutenant: Richard U. Bryan
2nd Lieutenant: James Crews

This company was formed at Livingston in Sumter County. The officers of the Livingston Rifles were commissioned on March 8, 1861, under authority of the Governor of Alabama based on an act of the legislature dated February 24, 1860. The service of this Company was tendered to the State of Alabama on April 13, 1861. They were accepted into State service on April 16, 1861. They left Livingston, Alabama, on May 5, 1861, with orders to proceed to Montgomery, arriving on May 8, 1861. They left Montgomery on May 12, 1861, arriving at Pensacola, Florida, the following day. They were mustered into service of the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment later that day, May 13, 1861.

On April 27, 1862, (a few weeks after J. A, Lockley's return to duty), the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment was reorganized and Company B became Company G under the command of Captain Nat R. E. Ferguson.
