Nathan Chaffin, Henry Guards

Nathan Chaffin was on the muster roll of the Henry Guards when the company tendered its services to the Governor of Georgia for the duration of the war on 6/5/1861 at McDonough, Henry Co., Ga. The company was commanded by Capt. T. W. Flynt. It was initially a part of the 2nd Regiment, 4th Brigade, Georgia State Troops, and became Company G of the Nineteenth Georgia Volunteer Infantry Regiment on 8/2/1861 when the regiment entered Confederate service. I can find no other military records for Nathan Chaffin in the 19th Georgia.

Based mainly on census records I believe this Nathan Chaffin to be Nathan Perry Chaffin, son of Tyre Jefferson Chaffin and Frances McAllister. Nathan P. Chaffin married 1) Mabel Lovvorn on 3/23/1841 in Butts Co., Ga., and after Mabel’s death in 1876 he married 2) Sinie Ann Elizabeth Ussery prior to 1880 in Alabama where he had moved between 1860 and 1870. Nathan P. Chaffin died 4/20/1888 in Randolph Co., Ala and is buried there in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery. Apparently, at least two of his brothers , Moses B. Chaffin and George M. Chaffin served in the Confederate army.

Nathan Chaffin of the Henry Guards is most likely not the same as Nathan H. Chaffin of the 14th Georgia Regiment, Co. C., who died in service.

He may possibly be the same as N. Chaffin, who enlisted 9/30/63 in Moreland’s Regiment, Alabama Cavalry, Co. E.

Any help identifying Nathan Chaffin of the Henry Guards would be appreciated.
