Ames / Gaylord / Caleb Huse
In Response To: Alan Pitts ()

Alan,

I am researching the arms and accouterments that the Ames MFG Co, and Emerson Gaylord, furnished Alabama, beginning in 1860.

I note your posts respective to the purchase of belts and swords (from Ames) in September, 1860.

Are other purchases (from Ames and/or Gaylord) referenced?

Caleb Huse (USMA Class of 1851) became employed by the University of Alabama in 1860 to assist the education of the cadets at the newly formed academy. Huse and James T. Ames were related through marriage. I'm interested to know if Huse is in anyway referenced to the 1860/1 purchases of arms (from Ames and/or Gaylord) or any other firm. Huse, of course, would accept a commission as a Confederate officer in 1861, but Jefferson Davis would dispatch him immediately to Europe to purchase military items for the Confederacy. Huse was from Newburyport, MA. Its intriguing to think that Huse was engaged in more than just educating cadets at the University of Alabama in 1860.

Thank you,
Ron Maness
