Re: Pvt. J.R. Bailey, Co. E, 17th Alabama Infantry

The only book I know of about the 17th is The Seventeenth Alabama Infantry: A Regimental History and Roster by Illene D. and Wilbur E. Thompson: Heritage Books Inc., 2001. It's well worth having. It shows a Julian L. Bailey as a private in Co. E who enlisted Sept. 20, 1862, at Camp Forney. It quotes from a 1907 journal in the National Archives: "Register of Sick and Wounded of the 17th Alabama Volunteers." "He reported to the regimental medical unit on December 25, 1863, diagnosis debilitas, and was placed on furlough on December 27 for 20 days. He reported again on March 27, 1864, with acute dysentery."

The book's roster for Co. E, compiled from a variety of sources, seems very complete, consisting of 296 names. It lists only two Baileys, Julian L. and Patrick G. My wife's great-great grandfather, Thomas Alexander Mercer, served in Co. K. He was captured at Nashville in 1864 and imprisoned at
Camp Douglas. He returned to Butler County and later moved with his extended family to near Lockhart, Texas.

Hope this helps.
