Pvt. J.R. Bailey, Co. E, 17th Alabama Infantry

Looking for information about my mother's great-uncle, J.R. Bailey, probably originally from Roanoke or thereabouts. Family lore provided enough clues to find his grave, in the Confederate cemetery at LaGrange, GA, where his tombstone lists his unit as Co. E of the 17th Alabama Infantry, and that he died in 1864. The family stories hold that he was MWIA sometime during the Atlanta Campaign, that he was sent by ambulance down to one of the hospitals at LaGrange, that he died along the way, unsurprisingly. The story also holds that another family member (perhaps a brother?) was sent to see about him after his mother had a death premonition, and met up with he ambulance carryings body after he had passed away.

This is literally the entirety of what I know about him, and the available records of CoE/17th AVI seem to be few in number. Anyone have anything about him or his unit available?
