Lynn --

The regiment was formed in the spring of 1864 from companies previously organized as the 12th Alabama Partisan Ranger Battn. Towards the end of 1862, General Bragg disbanded the battalion and consolidated its companies to fill out the 1st Alabama Cavalry Regt. Bragg's orders were reversed in the spring of 1864, and four new companies added to form a regiment.

This command always served under General Wheeler's command. During the fall and winter of 1863 Wheeler's cavalry was assigned to Longstreet in East Tennessee. By April 1864 Wheeler's cavalry was returned to north Georgia.

Aside from the assignment to Longstreet's command as mentioned, the 12th Alabama Cavalry had no connection to or service with the Army of North Virginia.
