Brewer states that the regiment organized in the later part of May 1861. This is wrong. He may have been dictating to a secretary and didn't recall the date. Wheeler (and I have no respect for Wheeler as a Confederate historian) simply had his secretary copy Brewer's work almost word for word. For a serious study of any Alabama Confederate unit I would not rely on either source.

Regimental records show the 9th Alabama organized on June 26, 1861, Richmond Va. Major O'Neal was elected on that day. Sam Henry was elected Lt. Col. on July 3rd; Cadmus Wilcox was appointed Colonel on July 9th. Aaron A. Burleson was appointed AQM on June 26th. Adjutant John R. B. Burtwell and Chaplain M. L. Whitten were also appointed the same date. Other staff officers received their appintments at later dates.

The "Beauregard Rifles" of Mobile and the "Jeff Davis Rangers" of Greenville were the only two companies not from North Alabama. The "Limestone Grays" and the "Calhoun Guard" organized at Lynchburg Va. on June 18th.
