A POW card in his file indicates his unit as Co. D 30 Regt Ala captured Feb 17, 1865 and released from Hart Island, New York Harbor June 6, 1865.

Also recorded the 30th Alabama on his Oath of Allegiance which he signs with an ‘X’, “his mark”

Perhaps it was a copy of his Oath of Allegiance which was used in identifying his organization after his death.
