Re: Errors on Tombstones

In 1998 we placed 77 stones for East Tennessee soldiers in Soldier’s Rest, Vicksburg City Cemetery. These men’s names had been recently found by Jeff Giambrone of the Old Vicksburg City Court House.

While there, I found one of the men already had a Confederate stone that had been placed back in the 1970’s. Further investigation revealed a civilian stone had been set way back when the soldiers section had originally been dedicated. Thus, this fellow had three stones in the same cemetery!

Additionally, when I published the list of these new stones to be placed, I was advised from a relative that one of the men was buried in Texas. I informed the head of the working party of this fact and should we not forward this stone on the Texas. His answer was no, and it was placed along with the others.

Further more, the document containing the names of these 77 soldiers was worn to the point that typographical errors were so numerous it took a serious amount of detective work to sort out.

Errors such as these abound in this work.
