Muster rolls for Company F, 2nd Georgia Infantry are scant with only 3 in the records, these for the periods, June 30, 1861, July/Aug, 1864,and Nov/Dec, 1864. He does not appear on any of these rolls.

If we grant that he was born October, 1827, he would have come of Conscription age April 1862. I would suspect that he may have enlisted sometime after this date and have been dropped from the rolls sometime before July, 1864. He could have been dropped for a number of reason, transfer, discharge, desertion, capture or death.

A Goggle search yields two hits claiming service in different units.

Lipham, Thomas Newton born Oct 7, 1827, died Apr 9, 1894 buried Valley Grove Randolph County.Enlisted in Heard County GA as a private in the 2nd Georgia State Guards, widow filed for his pension in Randolph County.

T. N. Lipscomb, Private, Captain Cato’s Company (Chattahoochee Guards), Willcoxon’s Regiment, Georgia,* joined for duty and enrolled August 9, 1863 at La Grange, Geo. by Capt. Cato for 6 months, his name appears on the muster roll dated August 22, 1863, however, his presence is not stated, no other records, the company mustered out February 1, 1864 at Rome, Ga., he was not recorded

M266: Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Georgia

A review of his widow’s pension papers may reveal his actual Confederate service.
