I am curious if there is a reason so many of the soldiers in the Confederate Army left as privates and returned as privates, after many years of war. Can we make any assumptions about their service if they returned home as privates after serving for almost the duration of the war? So many rosters, regardless of unit, seem to list private after private in their ranks and I am just curious why they would not have received promotions more frequently. How were promotions granted and if an ancestor never received one should there be any inference in that? Thanks
