After an initial review of alumni catalogs from Howard College in the years immediately preceding the war, I cannot find any of the men listed from Company K in my previous post who actually attended Howard College. Rather, it is supposed these men came mainly from the surrounding area to join the company formed by Howard president Henry Talbird, although Howard College reportedly had 40 students join the army out of 62 who were enrolled at the college when the war began. The only Howard alumni I have been able to confirm thus far in the 11th Alabama (as listed in the alumni catalog of 1858-1859 in the junior class) is Pvt. John Wesley Friend of Company B, who may have spent a brief time at the college in late 1859 (and possibly early 1860) after leaving the University of Alabama.
