David and Jonas Buell, 8th Alabama Infantry

In looking over the alumni record of Genesee College in New York, the names of David Buell and his brother Jonas Buell appear, along with considerable biographical detail - see Alumni Record and General Catalogue of Syracuse University 1872-99 Including Genesee College 1852-71 ... (Syracuse, NY, 1899). Both were born in Genesee County, NY and both obtained their B.S. degree from Genesee College, David in 1859 and Jonas three years earlier. It states David was a teacher in Georgiana, Alabama in 1860 and was also connected with railroad surveys. David and Jonas both entered Confederate service - two other brothers (not named) were in the Federal service. According to David's CSR, he spent 11 months as a Private in Company F, 8th Alabama Infantry, then six months as Orderly Sergeant of his company, and in November 1862 he became Ordnance Sergeant of the regiment, a position that he held at least through 1864. Up to July 1863 he had been present at Yorktown, Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Second Manassas, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Picking up again with the Genessee biography, after the war David was admitted to a law practice in November 1866, and practiced at Greenville, Alabama until 1884. He was a state senator from 1878-1880, and he was a vestryman at St. Thomas Episcopal church at Greenville for many years. David married Flora Herbert on October 13, 1868, and they had five children, Jessie (1870-1873), Flora (1873- ), Edith (1875 - ), Herbert (1877 - ), and Theodore (1880 - ). David Buell died on November 18, 1884. Jonas Buell was said to have been a CSA cavalry Captain. He married Ms. S. A. Finch on August 16, 1860 and they had one child, James L. (born July 31, 1864). Postwar Jonas lived in Hayneville (1865-1869) and Montgomery, Alabama (1869-1876), Rosita, Colorado (1876-1878) and Tucson, Arizona (1878 until his death on December 19, 1884 - one month after his brother David).
