It also occurred to me that these mounted scouts were pretty much like the sharpshooter battalions in AOT and ANV: on paper they were enlisted in their parent/original regiments but in action or on campaign trained and operated together. The scouts obviously worked in small groups/squads. Muster rolls for sharpshooter companies are not to be found, as the scouts. One additional example might be Montgomery's Scouts, a company drawn from Woods' Confederate Cavalry (originally organized by BG Wirt Adams). Officers and men from this organization, when captured, however, gave their unit as a designated company of Woods' Conf. Cav.
