Re: Assistant Surgeon W.F. Richardson

Tom, thanks for the information. I suspected that Dr. Richardson had been taken prisoner at Gettysburg and was attending wounded at Camp Letterman. I have been interested in his history since I learned that he treated my great grandfather George W. Smith, 8th Alabama Infantry, who was wounded at Gettysburg on July 2. I have not been successful in gathering much information about his association with the Florida unit but did find that a W.F. Richardson enlisted with the 1st Texas at Galveston in 1861. He was a physician but enlisted as a private. He made rank to 3rd Sgt and then appointed as an assistant surgeon. A special order was issued for him to report for medical duty in Richmond. I am curious if this Richardson is identical with the Letterman surgeon. I have enjoyed reading the medical reports of the attending physicians who treated the wounded and the skills they had during that time period. Thank again.
