Re: Assistant Surgeon W.F. Richardson

This is most likely Assistant Surgeon William F. Richardson of the Second Florida Infantry Regiment, who was left behind with other Confederate surgeons to treat the wounded from Gettysburg. Richardson was reported to have been taken captive on July 3 (more likely July 4) at one of the temporary field hospitals. Since so many of the Federal army surgeons were ordered to accompany their units when they marched away, the captive Confederate surgeons were retained in Gettysburg for several weeks. The surgeons and wounded of both armies began consolidating at Camp Letterman General Hospital after it opened for business circa July 20. Richardson would have handled many cases within a particular ward, whether Confederate or Union. Two are confirmed. He treated Private George W. Smith of Company K, 8th Alabama, sometime after August 7; and he also treated Corporal A. W. McCausland of Company B, 16th Maine after McCausland was transferred to Camp Letterman on August 24. Eventual evacuation of the wounded to established hospitals in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and elsewhere left the Confederate surgeons without a job, and they were then sent to Fort McHenry prison in Baltimore and detained until exchanged as a group in November 1863. Richardson was one of 106 Confederate surgeons and 15 or more chaplains (who had also been caring for the wounded at Gettysburg) who were temporarily held at Fort McHenry.
