The Alabama in the Civil War Message Board

Re: General Clanton and his War Record

On July 14, 1864, the 6th Alabama Cavalry attempted to drive back the 8th Indiana Cavalry, which had crossed the river at Greensport. One of Clanton's typically rash actions, it was foolish because the 8th Indiana outnumbered the Confederate attackers and were armed with Spencer repeaters. Indiana troopers picked off Clanton's officers leading the disasterous charge. Then they moved upstream to strike and disperse the 8th Alabama Cavalry at Ten Islands. Alabama losses were high, particularly among officers (15 killed, 40 wounded); the Yankees reported one man wounded.
