This is the best I could do, nor could I find him in the 23rd Alabama Infantry

Lewis M. Cannon, Private, Captain Gantt’s Company, Byrd’s Regiment, Alabama Volunteers,* enlisted April 2, 1862 at Andalusia, Ala. by Hiram Gantt for 90 days, recorded present at the June 25, 1862 muster, no further records

* This company was also known as Captain Gantt’s Company, 4th Regiment Alabama Volunteer Militia

Record of Events April 2 to June 25, 1862, stationed at Sluppen [sp?] Press, Mobile, Ala.

This Regt is composed of “Ninety days Men” who have armed & equipped themselves. Have been Employed in the City of Mobile Mainly as a police force and have had but little opportunity for improvement in Discipline Instruction, etc.

M311: Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Alabama

The Alabama 4th Militia Regiment was organized on 26 April 1862. The individual units comprising the regiment were limited term (90 days) companies organized at Mobile in March, 1862. They were mustered out that summer. Many of the men show up in other regiments later in the war.
This regiment served as a police force in and around Mobile.
