Thanks to Tom and George for the correction on Watson's rank. By the way, Bryan's CSR contains some detailed accounts of the capture of the wagons near Monterey as part of a court of inquiry. He reported that the enemy seized 10 of his wagons and two ambulances along the road that night. The toll also included his headquarters wagon and a large part of the money for the brigade's payroll. Only some quick action on Bryan's part prevented a much worse outcome. The quartermaster insisted that the Federal horsemen "in all probability would have captured the whole of my train" had he not succeeded in rallying a lieutenant and 16 men, who "made a charge upon the enemy driving them back."
