Alabama troops at Carlisle

A lively exchange has been underway on the Louisiana message board about the troops at Carlisle during the Gettysburg campaign. Most of the comments regarded the Alabama troops, so thought it best to reply on this board. Mention was made about the many troops from Lee's army attended Dickinson College in Carlisle. During the occupation, some of men took the opportunity to visit the campus. One of those was Lt. Elihu Wesley Watson from the 6th Alabama in O'Neal's Brigade. Watson noted in a letter home that he held "a long conversation" with college President Herman Merrills Johnson while he was there. "I like the man well enough but his principles are as bad as Wm. H. Seward's," Watson complained. "He is as rank as rankness itself. He is an unmitigated abolitionist and a bitter enemy to the South."
