Re: Colonel Charles Forsyth, 3rd Alabama Infantry

Thank you gentlemen.

Apparently, Colonel Forsyth was reported sick on October 19, 1864, and missed the Battle of Cedar Creek. During the battle, after General Battle was taken from the field wounded, command of the Brigade did go to the next most senior officer, Lieutenant Colonel Edwin L. Hobson of the 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

General Battle never recovered suffiently from his wounds to retake command of the Brigade. I believe that Colonel (as of November 24, 1864) Edwin Hobson remained in command of the Brigade for the balance of the war, but I have found one reference that indicates that Colonel Forsyth was in command on December 31, 1864.

Does anyone have access to Charles Forsyth's Compiled Service Record? I believe he was retired by December 31, 1864.
